Pre-Charge Bail and the Policing and Crime Act 2017

The Policing and Crime Act 2017 received Royal Assent on 31 January 2017. It contains various amendments to police powers. The most important change is the requirement for judicial oversight of lengthy pre-charge bail, with a view to a court considering whether further extensions of bail are necessary. It also confers on Chief Constables the right to more flexibly devolve powers to police staff and volunteers and reinforces requirements concerning the treatment of children and young people detained in police custody.
